Rediscovering Oneself

A journey of self-discovery: Our purpose in life.

For us to live efficiently and find true happiness, we must know our mission in life. I have been going through some issues for the past couple of weeks. Last time I discussed the journey to happiness. This time I would like to dive into self-discovery: Our purpose in life. Do you ever wonder or ask yourself what is your purpose in life?

The psalmist wanted to know himself, and he knew it would take God to help him do it: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties, and see if there is any wicked way in me” (Psalm 139:23-24a).

In my journey to happiness and self-discovery, I came to understand that marriage relationship often bring out the best–and the worst–in us. As a parent, I’m learning to know my true self through various experiences with my children.

My journey of self-discovery began when I started to ask God what He wanted me to do in this life. By trying to understand who I was and who God created me to be. I wanted to understand what made me act certain ways or love the way I do. It was deeper than I thought. It was being truthful to myself. The more I searched and learned about myself, the deeper my relationship with my God became. I got closer to God; every day it was me and God.

To me, self-discovery is simply becoming aware of your “what, why, and who you are”. It’s becoming aware of what you think and why, what you feel and why, and what you do and why; without judgment. To discover is to uncover or find something. There is no need to be ashamed of your findings during this journey. Uncovering or finding who you are as God’s beloved child is exciting!

Let me tell you why self-discovery is important for Christians. The Bible made us know that we are created in God’s image (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). One thing we all need to know is that each one of us is created uniquely by our Heavenly Father. Making time to discover who you are, can make you understand who God is and who He created us to be. By doing this, you are recognizing your strengths and your weaknesses. You actually understand that there is a purpose for you.

Self-discovery is everything about your existence. It is the most important thing in life. When you don’t understand who you are that means you don’t understand why you exist. The more you discover who you are the bolder and more courageous you become. The first self-discovery is to understand the source where you came from, which is from God. When you discover who you are, your potential, and your values, you fly with the wings of Eagles. Secondly, self-discovery helps you to stand strong and tall amid opposition in life.
